MBBS Admission Process in Karnataka

MBBS admission in Karnataka is conducted through two exams, NEET UG and UG-CET. The NEET UG exam is compulsory for anyone who wants to claim an MBBS seat there, while UG-CET is required for Karnataka students applying for government MBBS seats.

The admission to the MBBS course is conducted through the Karnataka NEET UG counseling. The entire MBBS admission process is managed by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA), and the steps are given below;

  1. Online Registration http://kea.kar.nic.in/.
  2. Registration fees.
  3. Security fees, if applicable.
  4. Documents Verification at KEA.
  5. Verification slip.
  6. Merit List.
  7. Seat Matrix and Fee Structure.
  8. Choice-Filling.
  9. Mock Allotment.
  10. Option entry editing.
  11. Final Allotment Result.
  12. Reporting to KEA for Verification of Documents.
  13. Writing at the Allotted College.

Online Registration

You have to register online through the KEA website (http://kea.kar.nic.in/) for the MBBS admission process.

The first step in registration is to provide all your UGNEET details, Identity details, email and phone number, 10th and 12th qualification details, reservations, password, etc., to receive your login ID.

Carefully note the login details; they are required throughout the counseling.

Once your initial registration is completed, you will have to proceed to complete the remaining details required in the form.

Documents like the NEET result, mark sheets, photograph, signature, etc. need to be uploaded in the specific format and size (usually 50-100kb in pdf/jpeg)

You have to verify your entered credentials, and the registration process is time-consuming.

The tip here is to keep all your documents and information handy before you start filling out your form. Also, try to use high-speed internet.

Registration fees

The registration fee is the last step after you declare the form for final submission. Once you fill in the registration details, you should check it once again before paying the registration fees.

The prescribed KEA registration fee charged for participating in the MBBS admission is:

KEA Registration Fee UG NEET In INR (one-time, non-refundable)
Karnataka SC/ST/Cat-1/PWD/ GM/2A/2B/3A/3B studentRs. 500/-
Non-Karnataka studentRs. 2500/-
NRI Ward/NRI/OCI/PIO/Foreign Nationals studentRs. 5,500/-

The registration fee can be paid only through a payment gateway (Credit Card or Debit Card, Internet banking, or bank challan).

However, I suggest the bank challan option, as that has been proven to be successful and stress-free.

Security fees, if applicable

Until the 2023 second round of the NEET-UG counseling, security fees weren’t applicable in Karnataka. However, from the mop-up round onwards, a refundable security deposit was charged in KEA counseling.

Payment of Rs.1,00,000/- lakh was compulsory for everyone to participate in the option entry round.

The security fees have to be paid online only (debit card/internet banking/credit card/ bank challan), and again, a reminder to keep the receipt of payment saved.

Documents Verification at KEA

In Karnataka, physical document verification before option entry is mandatory for certain candidates only.

These apply to candidates who have claimed reservations as per Government of Karnataka norms/Linguistic Minority/Religious Minority/NRI ward seats during the online application form submission.

On the other hand, students who haven’t claimed any category are not required to go for this round.

However, after allotment, they have to report to the KEA office in Bangalore.

Verification slip

The verification slip is a mandatory document that signifies the status of your eligibility.

The verification slip will be released to eligible MBBS applicants after document verification.

Details of the candidates, such as verified documents, caste, category, rank, secret key code, etc, will also be present on the slip. These details are required to participate in the option-entry round.

Merit List

The KEA will also publish the merit list of MBBS applicants online. You must ensure that your name is on the eligible student list.

Seat Matrix and Fee Structure

The KEA publishes the information related to MBBS seats and fee structure a day or two after the verification slip is released.

Various categories apply to seats, and these also dictate the annual tuition fees of MBBS in Karnataka. You can find the complete details in the subsequent sections below.

You can filter your options by referring to this information.

Choice-filling

The choice-filling round is announced simultaneously and lasts for 24 to 36 hours. So, you have to plan your choices before entering your options.

Additionally, the choice-filling process in Karnataka is tricky, so you have to be very cautious and sure about what and how you are filling your choices.

The number of options has no specific limit!

Mock Allotment

The result of the mock allotment is a unique feature of the Karnataka NEET counseling.

Based on the rank and options entered by students, a mock allotment result will be will be carried out.

This allotment process is only carried out to give the candidate a clear idea about their indicative result.

Based on the mock allotment, you can edit your college preferences for the final result.

Editing of Options

This round is available for a day or two. If it is necessary to add/delete/enter fresh options after the mock result, you can change your preferences for option entry for the final allotment.

Final Allotment

The final allotment can be the same or vary from the mock result. Anyways, your allotment is based on rank and preferences ordered for MBBS colleges.

Next, you can accept the allotted seat and confirm by paying the tuition fees through the payment gateway.

If you accept the allotment, ensure that you pay the designated tuition fees within the specific time limit given by the KEA to avoid losing your admission completely!

Reporting to KEA for Document Verification

Further, you have to report to the KEA for document verification and submission of your original documents.

All categories of students who have confirmed their MBBS admission have to visit the designated authorities as per the given rank-wise bell times.

Once your reporting procedure is complete, you will be handed your admission order for MBBS.

Reporting at the Allotted College

Immediately after you receive your final admission letter from the KEA, on the same day or next, report to the allotted medical institute.

You have to carry your admission order and sets of photo-stated documents of all your originals submitted to the KEA.

And finally! You are done with your MBBS admission.

If you are a student from other state, then you can go through my detailed post about MBBS admission for other state students in Karnataka.

In government colleges of Karnataka, 15% of MBBS seats are filled through All-India Quota, and 85% of MBBS seats are state quota seats.

Few minority colleges and deemed universities also contribute 25% of MBBS seats in the government category of seats.

However, state quota seats are only open for Karnataka domicile-bearing students. A certain number of Private seats are also available for admission to all eligible students.

The N seats are open for NRI/OCI/Foreign Nationals, while Q seats are commonly known as management seats, which are available to all eligible students.

The advantage of getting an allotment in the G or P seat is that the MBBS tuition fee is low for these categories compared to the NRI and Q quota seats. The details are given below;

If you need a detailed insight about fees, then you can also go through my detailed article about management quota fees in Karnataka for MBBS.
